Riding to Leave Cancer Behind
Cancer. It doesn’t play fair. It sneaks up and hits you from behind when you least expect it. But deep in the trenches in the war on cancer are the tenacious survivors determined to channel their experience into something positive. They emerge from their battles with the determination to win the war by eliminating the disease or diminishing the suffering of others through fund raising and awareness.
This is beautifully shown through the determination of Kevin Mulshine, co-founder of B STRONG Ride. His own battle with Stage 4 lymphoma was a life-changing experience. After more than 180 days of treatment at Boulder Community Health’s former Broadway campus, a last-minute surgery brought him much needed hope. The surgery ultimately proved to be lifesaving and a year later Kevin rode alongside his team of doctors up Boulder’s Left-Hand Canyon to celebrate his cancer-free status. The 34-mile ride symbolized more than his physical healing; his passion for life and cycling was reignited through support from family, friends and his doctors and he rode to leave the disease behind.
That cycling trip gave rise to the annual fundraising event known as the B STRONG Ride aimed at celebrating cancer survivorship. The ride, officially founded in 2011 by Kevin and Dr. Roger Nichols, has evolved into a first-class event that has collectively drawn more than 7,000 cyclists and raised more than $3 million for cancer patient care. A large percentage of the funds raised are donated to Boulder Community Health’s Center for Integrative Care, to support patients receiving therapies focused on reducing stress and anxiety, reducing the need for opioid dependency, enhancing wound healing and ultimately shortening hospital stays.
For the second year in a row, ETM was honored to join forces with several of our clients and friends to sponsor riders and support Kevin – a mutual long-time business partner and friend. Kevin handles CDD bond financing – a primary tool for funding Master Planned Communities – in which ETM is a leading firm. Together, they were a part of 822 riders determined to help those in their battles against cancer and they raised over $360,000.
“The experience was an in your face reminder that while life challenges [like professional or personal goals] will not be easy, the challenges are not impossible.” Lindsay Haga, ETM Senior Planner
The 2019 event took place on August 10. ETM team members (Hugh Mathews, Tyler Mathews, Peter Ma and Lindsay Haga) took on the Morning Thunder Mountain Loop totaling 68 miles and 5,000 feet of climbing. Joining us at the fundraiser were Dreamfinders (also an event sponsor): Patrick Zalupski, John Adler, Chris Butler, and David Smith; Chris Skinner (SEQ); Mikey White (PARC Group); Don Hinson; Seti, Ed Bulleit, and Brett Sealy (MBS Capital); and Mark Manago (Vantrust).
Not only does the B STRONG Ride exemplify ETM’s core values - giving to the community and partnering to improve quality of life – but the ride is also an opportunity to enjoy fellowship with our clients and strengthen our connections through comradery, sweat and life at high altitudes!
