ETM Team Members Add Up at MATHCOUNTS

MATHCOUNTS is a national coaching and math competition program that promotes 6th, 7th and 8th grade math achievement in every U.S. state and several territories. MATHCOUNTS stimulates student interest in math by making math achievement as challenging, exciting and prestigious as a school sport. Each fall, MATHCOUNTS distributes its free School Handbook and other coaching materials to schools across the country. Using these materials, teachers and volunteers coach student "mathletes", either as part of in class instruction or as an extracurricular activity. After several months of coaching, participating schools then select students to compete as teams and individuals in written and oral competitions. Students first compete in one of more than 500 local tournaments held in February across the country. Winners progress to state contests in March. There, the top four scorers in each state competition and the top coach earn an all-expense paid trip to the national finals in June.

The Northeast Florida Chapter of FES sponsored the local 2019 MATHCOUNTS competition on February 22, 2019 at the University of North Florida. This year 42 Northeast Florida public and private schools (around 350 students) participated in the local competition. Participation for the Northeast Florida section is the largest in Florida and one of the largest in the entire Nation.

ETM volunteers included Adriann Leblanc, Ann Newland, Lyndsay Keller, Hanna Gamsky, Rachel Salomon, Mark Manwell, Neal Milligan, Kenny Vera, John Westcott, and Medina. AJ Booth, Hung Hoang, Daniel Welch, and Chase Wilkinson all serve on the MATHCOUNTS planning committee.
